K. Hovnanian Homes, headquartered in Redbank, NJ, is one of the nation's largest builders of new homes. In 2009, as part of its continued growth and commitment to quality, K. Hovnanian Homes created a High Performance Homes™ offering—a new level of quality and performance it delivers across the board in all new homes it builds in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
Partnering with IBACOS, a U.S. Department of Energy Building America research team leader, K. Hovnanian's Landover Group builds research homes to evaluate new and emerging technologies, ensuring that they are production ready for its business and can be incorporated into homes with little to no additional cost to the homeowner.
Built in a Washington, D.C. suburb, Landover Group's most recent research home is the first home in Virginia to meet Building America's Builders Challenge. The home achieves a "50" on the EnergySmart Home Scale, which is comparable to the HERS Index rating scale and adheres to the Builders Challenge Quality Criteria—a set of best practices for durability, comfort and indoor air quality in homes. It is also ENERGY STAR® for Homes and LEED for Homes certified and has achieved the Gold Level in NAHB's National Green Building Program.
Through the Alliance, K. Hovnanian Homes is sharing best practices, ideas and lessons learned with other builders who are striving for greater energy performance.
