Despite political rhetoric to revive legacy industries, renewables are generating not only a larger slice of the energy pie, but businesses, jobs and salaries at an impressive rate.
As the chart below shows, the combined efforts of renewables has accounted for more than 1,200 businesses in 2015 (the latest figures available), an 8.3% jump from 2012. Take out the "Other" category, an amalgam of lesser-known, more entreprenurial ventures, and the growth of renewable energy businesses jumps to 28% from 2012 to 2015.
Even more impressive are the salaries these industries pay, an average of $93,908 per payrolled employee, led by wind ($113,059) and solar ($107,969).
Why It Matters: The range and scale of renewable energy companies and employment may surprise you … and change some minds about the $9.7 billion impact so-called “alternative” technologies have on the U.S. economy and its manufacturing base.
