Solar is Heating Up
For the first time, the number of homes using solar-generated energy for heating topped 100,000 (106,737, to be exact), a 157% increase since 2010.
Though still only a 0.1% market share among all residential heating options, solar has been installed on an estimated 1 million homes in the U.S. to meet some or all electricity demand, a number predicted to increase to 3.8 million homes by 2020.
Why it Matters: As solar becomes less expensive and easier to afford via financing and leasing plans, it can be leveraged to take on more of a home’s electrical burden, perhaps replacing oil and wood systems with renewable electricity and making HVAC even more energy efficient.
